The Influence of Cross-Border Cooperation on the Competitiveness of Euroregions
FRIEDRICHS, Marco Jerome
This master's thesis analyses the influence of cross-border cooperation on the competitiveness of Euroregions by means of a comparative case study of two selected Euroregions: the Greater Region at the intersection of the borders between the states of Belgium, France, Luxembourg and Germany, and the Euregio Egrensis, covering territories of the Czech Republic and the three German Länder Bavaria, Saxony and Thuringia. The research objective raised first and foremost two questions: How to measure the influence of cross-border cooperation and how to measure the competitiveness of (Euro)regions? This thesis is therefore divided into two parts. First, the key concepts of Euroregions, cross-border cooperation and regional competitiveness are discussed at length as all of them are demanding notions in their own right and their understanding critical for the success of the subsequent comparative case study, which then forms this thesis's second part.
DER EINFLUSS GRENZÜBERSCHREITENDER ZUSAMMENARBEIT AUF DIE WETTBEWERBSFÄHIGKEIT VON EUROREGIONEN Die EUREGIO Bayerischer Wald-Böhmerwald-Unterer Inn und die Europaregion Donau Moldau als Motor für den niederbayerischen Grenzraum? Eine Fallstudie.
PLEINTINGER, Johanna Maria
In this master thesis the influence of cross-border cooperation on the competitiveness of Euroregions is researched on the example of the Lower Bavarian border region to wards the Czech Republic. The two examined Euroregions are the EUREGIO Bayer ischer Wald-Böhmerwald-Unterer Inn and Europaregion Donau-Moldau. Therefore four qualitative interviews were lead with five people working in these two organisa tions. The results of these interviews were then compared and related to relevant re searches about the study area and statistical data. The regional competitiveness was measured according to five selected indicators derived from the European Regional Competitiveness Index and the Pyramid Model from Lengyel and Lukovics: the human factor, economy, education, infrastructure and tourism. According to the work of the latter, the regional competitiveness was measured through the quality of life. The re sults show that cross-border cooperation can indeed contribute to increased competi tiveness.
Euroregions and INTERREG V-a: A comparative analysis of projects at the Czech-Polish border
Outhierová, Leticie ; Young, Mitchell (advisor) ; Kasáková, Zuzana (referee)
Euroregions are a popular type of cooperation between sub-state actors in the Czech-Polish border area. However, their impact on regional development is still a subject of debate among academics. This thesis explores if the Euroregions affect how their members use EU funds. For this purpose, the members' and non-members' projects, realized within the framework of the INTERREG V-a program between 2014 and 2020, are compared. They are compared in terms of price, number, and type of participants, specific themes, and general thematic goals. The thesis is narrowed down to bilateral Euroregions at the Czech-Polish border - specifically to the Euroregions Glacensis, Praděd, Silesia, and Cieszyn Silesia. The research also offers a comparison between the four selected Euroregions. The results indicate that members' projects are significantly more expensive and involve a larger number of participants. Differences were also spotted regarding the themes and thematic objectives. In comparison, the members' projects of selected Euroregions also had different characteristics. This thesis inquires whether the distinction between members' and non-projects exists.
Historical development of crossborder co-operation in Czechia after 1989 on the example of Euroregions
Mňuk, Tomáš ; Havlíček, Tomáš (advisor) ; Jeřábek, Milan (referee)
Since the 1990s, cross-border cooperation has been an instrument of the European Union for the development of geographically disadvantaged regions at the border, for which cooperation should be a way to cope economically with the central areas and be an instrument for the often isolated and culturally different inhabitants of the border. Euroregions, which were established to solve regional economic, institutional, or social problems, became a platform for cross-border co-operation activities. One of the objectives of the thesis was to describe the circumstances of the establishment of Euroregions and development of the activity of Euroregions in Czechia with the assumption of regional differentiation. The method used for this part was a desk research and semi-structured interviews. Thanks to finances from the European Regional Development Fund, cross-border cooperation is supported in the form of subsidies, which are available for individual program periods for applicants from defined areas near the border. The Czech parts of the Euroregions are administrators of Small Project Funds, which include projects with a small financial scope, mostly supporting meeting activities of local communities. The second goal of the thesis was the comparison of the funds of individual Czech Euroregions over...

Šachová, Anna ; Němcová, Ingeborg (advisor) ; Antal, Jarolím (referee)
Cross-border cooperation is an important instrument of European integration. The thesis deals with cross-border cooperation within euroregions, more precisely in the oldest Czech Euroregion Nisa. The objective of this thesis is to find asymmetries in the cooperation of the Czech part with the German and Polis hone, and how these asymmetries are reflected in realized projects. The thesis comes to a conclusion that the three parts of Euroregion Nisa are different when it comes to economic potential, and that the projects almost do not deal with the most pressing problems. Another conclusion is the existence of an asymmetry in cooperation, i.e. absence of common trilateral projects.
